Why Are There So Many Denominations?

Kevin Cauley --preacherfiles.com

Recently I was asked this very important question. It is a question about which many people have pondered. It is a question that largely goes unanswered by many that choose rather to uphold the status quo of mainline religious bodies today. It is a question, however, that is begging to be answered by millions and answer it we must! Christ prayed for his disciples in John 17:20-23. He said,

Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.
Jesus prayed for the unity and oneness of those who believe on Him. If this was His great concern and plea, then why do we have so many "churches?"

The first reason we have so many "churches" is because of something that John wrote. He said in 1 John 4:1 "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world." Indeed there are many false prophets that have gone out into the world and some of these false prophets have created "churches" of their own. And this is part of Satan’s plan to divide the followers of Christ. The Bible teaches that if it is to his benefit that Satan can transform himself into an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14). We go on to read in the next verse, "Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness." In other words, there are people in the world today who appear to be ministers of righteousness but who are actually working for Satan. How do you know the difference between the two? John has the answer. "Try (test) the spirits whether they are of God." Therein lies the only available avenue to know whether one is teaching truth or falsehood–to test the teaching of the false teacher. How does one do this? Compare what they are saying to what the Bible says and then ONLY believe what the Bible ACTUALLY teaches. If the Bible does not actually teach it, then reject it. Many false prophets mean many false "churches." Herein is a reason why there are so many churches.

The second reason we have so many "churches" is because there are many who are not content to be just Christians. Many want to be "Christians" of a particular sort. This was the problem that those at the church at Corinth were having. Paul had to rebuke them because they were calling themselves after something other than Christ. We read in 1 Corinthians 1:11, 12 "For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you. Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ." Just like today many want to say that they are Baptist-Chrisitans, Methodist-Christians, Presbyterian-Christians, Pentecostal-Christians, Lutheran-Christians, etc. What was Paul’s response to this type of thinking? He said, "Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?" Instead of being content to be followers of the one who was crucified for them, instead of being content to be followers of the one in whose name they were baptized, they wanted to be known as Paul-Christians or Peter-Christians, or Apollos-Christians. They were not content with just being mere Christians. They wanted their own personalized, monogrammed "Christian club." This lack of wanting to be merely Christians causes many "churches" to come into existence today.

The third reason we have so many "churches" is because there are many who simply want their own way. And they want it enough that they are willing to allow a church to be divided over their own opinions. They confuse their opinion with what the scriptures teach. To avoid this requires that we study and know what the Bible teaches so that we do not pawn off our own opinions as Biblical teaching and so that we do not pawn off Biblical teaching as our own opinions. Either mistake is disastrous when it comes to the unity of the church. The Christians at Borea practiced this. We read in Acts 17:11 "These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so." They did not merely accept the preacher’s opinion regarding what the Bible taught. They checked things out; they made absolute sure that what Paul was saying was the truth. They were not content to accept Paul’s opinion. Accepting the opinions of men as "gospel truth" causes division and is a large part of the reason there are so many "churches" today.

What is your desire my friend? Do you long for the kind of unity for which Jesus prayed? Do you desire to test the things that you believe against what the scriptures say? Do you want more than anything to be "just a Christian?" Then I offer you this challenge this very day. Find a "church." Question them regarding what they believe and practice. If the scriptures do not teach it, then reject it. If they are doing what the scriptures teach and ONLY what the scriptures teach, then accept it and become part of that church today. It is my personal conviction that the church of which I am a member, the church that belongs to Christ–the church of Christ–is doing exactly this, no more and no less. The church of Christ is not a denomination as many are lead to believe. It is merely a body of Christians who meet every week to worship together and who have banded together in God’s church to further the work of our Lord, Jesus Christ. We invite you to learn more about us and lead the simple life that is called "Christian."

Todays Devonational comes from the Truth for the World webpage entitled: SCIENCE PROVES THE BIBLE

An excerpt: " The Bible begins with these words. "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." There are many people in the world who do not believe that statement. Some say God does not exist, and therefore, the Bible cannot be His Word. Sometimes we are led to believe that all true scientists do not believe in God, or the Bible. However, this is not correct. True science is not opposed to the Bible. In fact, science, properly applied and understood, proves the Bible to be inspired. The Bible is not a science book. However, whenever it makes a statement relating to a a scientific principle or fact, it is completely accurate.

Let us notice some examples of the harmony between science and the Bible. "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" (Gen. 1:1) This was written by Moses through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit about 1500 B.C. In 1820 A.D. a man named Hubert Spencer gave the world five scientific principles by which man may study the unknown. They are time, force, energy, space, and matter. However, Moses, by inspiration, gave us those scientific principles in Genesis 1:1. "In the beginning" --time; "God"-- force; "created" -- energy; "the heavens" --space; "and the earth" -- matter. All of Spencer's scientific principles are right there in Genesis 1:1. "

"Peter, An Apostle of Jesus" by -DAVID THURMAN

An excerpt: "We Are Aliens
Peter begins with a simple fact: we are not
citizens of this world. We don't belong here. As
Paul says, "Our citizenship is in heaven, from
which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord
Jesus Christ" (Phil 3:20). One reason the world
hates us and mistreats us is that we are not part
of them.

Memorial Day

Kevin Cauley --preacherfiles.com

The verse that immediately came to my mind when thinking about Memorial Day was John 15:13, "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." This verse is often quoted on Memorial Day and frequently applied (in most cases, correctly) to the men and women who have died to serve our country. Memorial Day, then, is the day that we remember those who have fallen, whether in battle or in peacetime, who have sacrificed all simply for the sake of their fellow man’s freedom. This day, in our culture, comes around once a year and to most, this day signifies the beginning of the summer season and the associated recreational activities.

What will you do on Memorial Day? Some will have backyard cook outs. Some will go to the lake or beach. Some will go to a park for a picnic. Others will attend a parade or some other Memorial Day celebration. But our eternal destiny does not depend upon us doing any one particular thing on Memorial Day.

There is another memorial day, however, that is much more significant than the Memorial Day which we celebrate every year. This memorial day commemorates One who not only gave His life for his friends, but also for His enemies (Romans 5:7, 8). This memorial day is not to remember those who have fallen in battle, but One who was triumphant over death (Colossians 2:15). This memorial day doesn’t begin a single season of the year, but begins every week of the year. This memorial day is observed by those who are faithful Christians upon the first day of the week, every week. What is this day of which I speak? It is Sunday, the first day of the week (Mark 16:2, 9, Acts 20:7), the Lord’s day (Revelation 1:10).

Yes, today is memorial day. The early Christians gathered upon the first day of the week to remember the Lord by partaking of the Lord’s supper (Acts 20:7). Jesus said in Luke 22:19 "…this do in remembrance of me" and Paul in 1 Corinthians 11:24, 25 reiterated this statement of Jesus in regard to the Lord’s Supper as well. Yes, today is memorial day. When we eat of the bread and drink of the fruit of the vine, we remember the body and blood of Jesus. We remember that He died for us; we remember that He was resurrected to live again (Philippians 3:10); we remember that his physical death gave us spiritual life that we might live in Him each day (1 Thessalonians 5:10). Yes, today is memorial day as well as next Sunday, and the Sunday after that; each first day of the week we observe memorial day.

What will you do on memorial day? Many think that memorial day is a day to stay home and rest, or go to the park, or beach or lake. Yet others believe that we must make an observance of memorial day, but not the full observance by remembering His body and blood in His supper, at His table. We each have a choice this memorial day. We can abide by the instructions of the One who established memorial day and remember Him as He desires, or we can do whatever we desire whether that is not observing the day at all, or only partly observing it. One thing is certain; our eternal destiny will depend upon how we observe this memorial day

Ten Commandments for Getting Along with People

posted by Robert J. Young
author unknown
[permission is given to reprint with credit noted]

1. Keep chains on your tongue. Say less than you think. Cultivate a low, persuasive voice. How you say it often counts more than what you say.

2. Make promises sparingly, and keep them faithfully, no matter what the cost.

3. Never let an opportunity pass to say a kind and encouraging word to or about someone. Praise work well done, regardless of who did it. If criticism is needed, criticize helpfully.

4. Be interested in others-interested in their pursuits, welfare, homes and families. Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep. Let everyone you meet, however humble, feel that you regard him or her as an important person.

5. Be cheerful. Keep the corners of your mouth turned up. Hide your pains, worries, and disappointments under a smile. Laugh at good stories and learn to tell them.

6. Keep an open mind on all debatable questions. Discuss, but do not argue. It is a mark of superior minds to disagree, yet be friendly.

7. Let your virtues speak for themselves. Refuse to talk of others' vices. Discourage gossip. Say nothing of another unless it is something good.

8. Be careful of another's feelings. Wit and humor at another's expenses is rarely worth the effort, and may harm where least expected.

9. Pay no attention to ill-natured remarks about you. Live so nobody will believe them. Disordered nerves and bad digestion are common causes of backbiting.

10. Don't be too anxious about receiving what is due you. Do you work, be patient, keep your disposition sweet, forget self.

The Problem of Religious Ignorance

Frequently we hear people express differing viewpoints about even the most serious of religious issues. Why is this? One of the main reasons is lack of knowledge. Many people simply do not know what the Bible teaches.

Some people have never heard the gospel of Jesus or have never considered the evidence that it is the word of God. Such was the case of Cornelius, who needed to be taught the gospel. As soon as he heard it, he obeyed (Acts 11:14; 10:30-48).

But many would be surprised to learn that much ignorance of God´s word is willful: people just don´t want to know what the Bible says (2 Peter 3:5). In Matthew 13:15 Jesus described people who closed their eyes and ears, because they did not want to understand His teachings.

But why would anyone prefer darkness rather than light, ignorance rather than knowledge, error rather than truth? In John 3:19,20 Jesus said: "... the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed."

There is a certain amount of enjoyment in sin. Some do not want to give up their illicit pleasures. Faithful Christian living also requires time, effort and self-sacrifice. Many are not willing to put forth this effort, so they prefer to simply ignore the truth.

But people need to realize that spiritual ignorance is not bliss. Acts 17:30 says that God does not overlook ignorance. Rather, He commands all men everywhere to repent.

The solution is found in Acts 17:11. The Bereans learned the truth because "they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily..." Are you willing to follow their example?

An Athenian Attitude

Kevin Cauley ---The Preacherfiles.com

One of the characteristics of the people at Athens was that they were always interested in hearing about something new. Luke records this attitude for us in Acts 17:31 where he writes, "For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing."

The nation in which we live today is not unlike those Athenians in that we delight to hear of "new" things. We glue our ears to the radio to listen to the next blurb spoken by the next popular commentator. We sit transfixed in front of the television set each evening at 5:30 to find out what is going on in the world. We can even surf the internet to get our news sooner than 5:30. We desire fresh information – things which we have not heard. The latest football, basketball, baseball or hockey score must be ours. The latest political quip must be on our lips. The latest election results must be broadcast even before all of the polls close. We just can’t wait for the next update, sound bite, news worthy item! And when someone comes to us with a piece of information that is not up to date we say rather oxymoronically, "That’s old news."

Then, Sunday morning rolls around. "It’s time to go to worship, to do the same old things every week. To listen to the same old message that we have heard time and time again. Everyone’s heard it all of their life. Why should we go and listen once more?" Let’s note a few good reasons why.

First, while the gospel message may be old news, it is still good news! That is sure to be something that you don’t find in the dominant media today, good news. Oh there may be a story or two that is more or less positive in application, but the majority of the news today is going to be centered around death, war, fighting, tumults, disagreements, and political wrangling. While such news may be "fresh" it is certainly not good. The gospel contains THE GOOD NEWS! That’s basically what the word gospel means. It is the basic message that God sent His Son Jesus to this world to die on the cross so that man could have hope to live with God in heaven. That may be old news, but that is always good news! Paul wrote in Romans 10:15b, "How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!" Yes, we, along with Paul should rejoice in the good news of the gospel!

Second, while we may have heard the message before, we need to hear it again. Missing one meal out of a day may not hurt us, but it will weaken us. Such is also true with spiritual food. We need to be feed regularly from God’s word so that we continue to grow stronger in the Lord. Peter wrote in 2 Peter 1:12 "Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth." He wanted them to remember the truths of the gospel, even though they knew them and were established in them. Spiritual growth requires spiritual nourishment and if we are not growing, then we are dying. Let’s feast on those good ol’ gospel meals at every opportunity!

Third, while we may have heard the message earlier in our life, we hopefully have grown and the message has new application for us. All Christians are expected to grow in the Lord. Peter writes, "As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby" (1 Peter 2:2). Unlike the human body, as Christians we constantly grow throughout our lifetime. In each phase of our life, the message of the gospel may be applied so that old truths have fresh significance for us. There is no end to the things that we may learn from the Bible. No one person can ever say that they have mastered the depths of its pages. Each of us has the responsibility to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ (2 Peter 3:18).

We may hear the same truths preached each week that we have heard all our life, but let’s rejoice in God’s good news! Let’s feast upon the bread of life! Let’s grow as we encounter life! God’s truth is timeless; our lives are temporary. Let’s not develop an Athenian Attitude toward the gospel.

"SALVATION AND THE SEATBELT "

An excerpt "The operation of a seat belt is a simple thing, but so is the operation of God in bringing about salvation. Salvation is the simplest subject in all the Bible. God made it simple. Man has complicated it, but God intended it to be simple, because God's desire is that all men be saved and come to a knowledge of the truth. If it is God's desire that all men be saved, does it not follow logically that He would make salvation the simplest, most understandable subject in all the world?''---tftw
